What Is the GSSD Academy?

The GSSD Academy is an online, action-oriented service platform that facilitates access to Southern development solutions and Southern expertise for learning and application.

The GSSD Academy offers tested tools, methodologies and partnership strategies that enable practitioners and Southern partners to:

  • Identify, document and catalogue Southern development solutions with quality assurance through broad-based peer-reviewed processes;
  • Create and maintain rosters of Southern experts; and
  • Promoting quality and broader dissemination is the key objective of the GSSD Academy. Most methods and tools established by the Academy facilitate the implementation of quality-assurance processes based on extensive peer review. The processes are designed to rely on and intensify knowledge-sharing in such a way that the processes are as important as the resulting products.
  • Establish thematic Academy institutes linked with centres of excellence to facilitate access to Southern knowledge, engagement of Southern networks and integration with the other platforms of the 3-in-1 architecture. The Academy also offers an online space for learning about SSC practices including courses on SSC, access to the SSC Handbook and webinars on SSC cooperation practices.

The GSSD Academy is the first pillar of the integrated 3-in-1 multilateral support architecture to promote South-South cooperation. Southern development solutions identified by the GSSD Academy can be showcased at the Global South-South Development Expo (GSSD Expo), and proven solutions can be transferred through the South-South Global Assets and Technology Exchange (SS-GATE) through which Southern solution seekers and providers can transfer and obtain needed technology, development solutions and financing in a secure environment.

How It Works

The GSSD Academy raises the profile of Southern solutions and Southern experts by promoting quality assurance and broader dissemination. It provides an enabling environment for Southern solutions and experts to undergo rigorous peer review so as to promote innovative approaches, insightful understanding and highly qualified experts from the South for engagement in development activities.

With the aim of supporting the inclusive utilization and sharing of Southern technologies, knowledge and talent, the GSSD Academy:

  • Facilitates identification of Southern development solutions and the processes for improving, documenting and cataloguing them. The GSSD Academy offers streamlined methodologies, online tools and virtual support for partners to document solutions, organize peer-review exercises, refine their solutions case studies, and incorporate documented solutions into the GSSD Academy online solutions bank: the Solution Centre.
  • Offers an online Solution Centre, where users can search or browse through hundreds of Southern solutions. In this way, users can identify not only ideas and experiences that might be relevant to their context and work but also the experts who have advanced such practices and who could help to implement them.

Partners can target different levels of engagement with the GSSD Academy, starting with the contribution of a single
solution to be reviewed by peer practitioners and ranging to the editing and publishing of a global selection of
solutions via the series, Sharing Innovative Experiences.

  • Supports the building and management of rosters of experts, providing equal opportunity to professionals from developing countries and particularly women. The GSSD Academy has developed an online service platform and tools, the WIDE Roster Centre, which can help you to develop a talent bank tailored to your needs and area of practice. Using this centre, you will be able to timely and easily identify relevant experts and refer them for particular assignments.

Partners can establish rosters of experts with WIDE and share experiences and talent with the large network of WIDE roster managers.

  • Engages and supports the establishment of thematic development institutes, focusing on bringing together practitioners committed to promoting social and economic development of the South via South-South cooperation initiatives in a specific area of expertise.

Partners can establish thematic institutes with extended access to Southern networks and ongoing activities to complement the documentation of both solutions and rosters of experts on a particular theme.

  • Grants users access to a South-South and triangular cooperation resource centre from which they can take a course or review lecture materials, find answers in the How-to Handbook, download forms or templates helpful for South-South cooperation initiatives, and access the South-South e-Library.

Partners can conduct online research at the GSSD Academy and download practical tools.

  • Integrates proven Southern solutions into the showcasing and transactional platforms offered by the GSSD Expo and SS-GATE architecture in order to support the transfer of these solutions across the global South.
